Liver Cancer Treatment: What Is Available
There are liver cancer treatments for some types of liver cancer. In some cases there are very few, if any standard liver cancer treatments. If you find yourself in need of a liver cancer treatment that requires surgery, you should make sure you have a surgeon who does this type of surgery often. It is very difficult to operate on the liver because it is a complex organ. Patients who have surgery as part of a cancer treatment run the risk of significant bleeding if the procedure is not done properly by someone with a lot of experience. Liver cancer treatment may include a partial hepatectomy or even a liver transplant. Both of these treatments can be considered if the cancer is found in one place in the liver and can be removed by having surgery. If cancer can not be surgically removed this type of cancer treatment becomes much more difficult. There are no standard liver cancer treatments at this point but chemotherapy is under investigation as well as radiation therapy. Anothe cancer treatment option that is being researched is cryosurgery followed by chemo hyperthermia or external-beam radiation. There are a few other treatments being investigated such as; alcohol ablation therapy or new chemotherapy options. Sometimes doctors
will suggest clinical trials as part of a liver cancer treatment program. If you have been diagnosed with liver cancer make sure you have all the facts before you make any decisions regarding your treatment.
