No Cure for Lung Cancer Yet – Treatments Are The Only Option

In 2004, it was estimated that over 160,000 people inflicted with lung cancer would die – making a cure for lung cancer even more necessary in the minds of thousands.

Unfortunately, standard treatment options are the only bet for a cure for lung cancer today.

Surgery can be used depending on the type and stage of lung cancer. It can clear the cancer in the lung by removing the cancerous tumors and tissue surrounding it, but depending on several factors, the cancer could reappear. Surgery is not a cure for lung cancer.

Radiation therapy is used to shrink the cancerous cells, and is a common way to treat lung cancer. It should be noted, however, that there are several side effects that go along with radiation therapy. Once the cancer has been treated, it can reoccur. Radiation therapy is not considered a cure for lung cancer.

During chemotherapy, patients are given an anti-cancer drug injected into their veins – which may be useful when cancer has spread throughout the body. Chemotherapy kills the cancer cells, but also kills the good cells in your body – resulting in some unwanted side effects. Chemotherapy may successfully treat the cancer, but since a cure for lung cancer is still unavailable, patients may see a reoccurrence as well.

Without a definite cure for lung cancer, the cure rate for lung cancer is primarily based on the stage of the disease. Non-small cell lung cancer Stage I has a five-year cure rate of 47 percent; stage II has a cure rate of 26 percent and cure rates drop precipitously beyond this point. Alternative approaches to a cure for lung cancer are scarce, but holistic health practitioners may recommend lifestyle and dietary changes that could be beneficial.
